As the children of Narendra Raj Panday, we have no doubt that our father would have dedicated this book to his parents, Khagendra Raj Panday and Piyush Priya Panday, who taught him the values of hard work, to King Birendra, to whom he was extremely loyal, in life and in memoriam, and to his wife, Nalini Panday, who was his companion in all aspects of his life for more than 45 years.
From our perspective, we are honored to be able to publish this book on behalf of our father, who taught us by his actions, to be honest even in difficult situations and never to speak a harsh word in doing so.
King Birendra’s death had a devastating impact on our father. Not one to share his feelings, it took him a long time to be able to speak of the event of June 1, 2001. This book sheds light on the closeness and trust that he shared with the King from early in his career at the palace. He told us he wanted to write about King Birendra to humanize him. Our father kept copious notes on meetings and other events at the palace in handwritings only he could understand. This book is largely based on those notes and reflects his perspectives and opinions with minimal edits.
